Which size netpot is a common question and even came up on a recent thread on /r/DWC. Netpots typically come in 2″, 3″, 4″, 5″ and 6″ sizes. Personally I find 2″ netpots completely useless. They are so small and shallow that light leaks are unavoidable. You are much better off using foam collars for small plants (drill 1 3/4″ holes for them).
These are the netpots that I use
- Foam Collars (for germination, cloning and veg)
- 3″ Netpot (for veg)
- 6″ Netpot (for flower)
- Hole Saw Kit
Of course your DWC Reservoir will need to be drilled to accommodate the net pot you choose. That is where the hole saw kit comes in handy. Typically I use 17 gallon pots for all my DWC growing. Flowering plants get 2x 6″ net pots per tote and Vegging plants get 6x 3″ net pot per tote.
There are two types of 6″ net pots commonly available on the market. Avoid the style on the right if using a hole saw as they will fall through 6″ net holes. These undersized net pots can usually be identified by the two tabs which do nothing for keeping it from falling through.
Transplanting in DWC
I have a dedicated article where I discuss transplanting in DWC and perpetual growing in more depth. The takeaway is that you have two options from going from a 3″ net pot to a 6″ net pot for flowering.
- If the roots are interwoven into the 3″ net pot you can place the full 3″ net pot into the 6″ net pot.
- If the roots are not interwoven you can gently remove them and place through a small gap in the 6″ net pot
Regardless of how you are transplanting, or which size netpot you are using, it is important to be very gentle when handling the roots. Clean your hands thoroughly and feel free to cut a few links in the net pots to allow the root mass to be pulled though. The hole should be big enough for the roots to go through, but not so big that hydroton falls through.
