We have gotten to the point where you can essentially build an entire fully functional DWC grow sourced entirely on Amazon. What a time to be alive. There are some things that may be a bit cheaper at your local hardware store (e.g. heavy duty storage totes). But for pretty much everything else it’s tough to beat Bezos on price and convenience.

pH Meter & pH up/down
pH meter is an aboslute must for DWC growing. I recommend it for soil growers as well. Always keep the electrode on your pH meter moist by keeping the cap on. Letting it dry out will damage the pH meter (ask me how I know).

Finally, to make a really high quality box you will need silicone and white spray paint. Paint the sides and lid of the tote white to help keep temperatures down. Use silicone to fill in the gaps where the lid meets the net pot.

EC/TDS Meter – EC and TDS are two names for the same thing. These meters are not as essential as a pH Meter, but are nice to have. An EC meter measures electrical conductivity and infers the nutrient solution based on dissolved ions. This can be useful for when you are topping up nutrient solutions. If you notice the EC/TDS is high you can reduce the concentration of the top up nutrients to prevent burning the plants.

DWC Cloner – There is an entire post dedicated to the DIY construction of one of these cloners but I thought I would include it here. These make cloning and even germinating seeds so easy I would almost consider it an essential item. You can also buy these pre-manufactured. Inline Carbon Filter – Will help reduce the amount of chlorine in your DWC water reservoir. When growing for flower I have never noticed a chlorine taste, but when making extracts such as bubble hash and rosin (even when using RO water for the extraction) a chlorine taste can persist in the final product.

Step Drill Bits – Step drills are without a doubt the best way to drill into plastic (making clean deburred holes). They also work great for thin metal and wood. Milwakee Hackzall – This is one of my favourite tools, especially if you already have m18 batteries. Milwaukee took a clunky two-handed hackzall and turned it into a beast of a one-handed machine. I’ve done everything from cutting down firewood for camping trips (with the 9″ pruning blade) to chopping steel at the scrapyard and even using it as a jigsaw for cutting out an air intake filter. It’s the favorite tool in my set.
