Trim jail.. we’ve all been there. Using the best trimming scissors you can get will make the difficult task of trimming much easier.
When it comes to trimming scissors there are two main options. You can get spring loaded shears or rounded handled scissors.
The advantage of spring loaded trimming scissors is rather obvious… they spring open automatically. The less obvious disadvantage is that you are fighting the spring the entire time, often leading to a cramped hand and carpel tunnel like symptoms (especially with cheap shears where the spring is not well calibrated).
With the Vivosun trimming shears this was the most apparent. The spring on these trimming scissors is so long that without modification it would destroy your hand in under an hour.
Spring loaded vs rounded handles is a matter of preference. I tend to prefer the rounded handles because my hands are prone to cramping up. In my younger days I remember preferring the spring loaded shears because I could fly through flower.
The Doc’s Pick for Best Trimming Scissors
My personal favourite are the shear perfection bonsai scissors. Not because of the clever pun, but they are light, well-balanced and feel smooth to the touch. I prefer the curved model but both work equally well.
Cleaning your Trimming Scissors
Perhaps the most important part of owning a good pair of trimming shears is proper maintenance. I always recommend soaking in a jar of isopropyl alcohol for 15+ minutes. The built up oil residue will loosen up enough to be wiped off with a paper towel. Abrasives should never be used on trimming scissors as they will etch away the non-stick coating, making the scissors more prone gunking up.
Curved vs Straight blade
Most scissors come in both styles. My personal preference is:
straight blade = plant pruning & wet trim
curved blade = dry trim
